Andhra Pradesh Announces Monthly Stipend for Descendants of Telugu Literary Icon Gurajada

The Andhra Pradesh government has moved to honor the legacy of renowned Telugu playwright and poet Gurajada Apparao by instituting a monthly stipend for his surviving family. Under the decision announced by the State Creativity and Cultural Commission, Gurajada’s great‑grandson will receive a fixed amount of ₹30,000 each month, a payment that will continue for the remainder of his life.
Chief Secretary K. S. Ravichandran confirmed that the honorarium is part of a broader effort to recognize historic contributors to the state’s cultural heritage. The commission, which oversees initiatives to promote arts, literature and creative expression, will handle the disbursement and ensure the payment is regular and uninterrupted.
Gurajada Apparao, best known for his 1910 drama Kanyasulkam and the patriotic poem “Desamunu Preminchumanna,” is celebrated for pioneering modern Telugu theatre and for championing social reform through his writings. His works continue to be studied in schools and performed on stage, cementing his status as a cultural touchstone in Andhra Pradesh and beyond.
The new stipend reflects a growing trend among Indian states to provide financial support to the families of eminent artists, writers and scholars whose contributions have shaped regional identity. Similar schemes have been introduced in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where descendants of celebrated poets receive monthly assistance as a token of gratitude.
