Andhra Pradesh chief minister to assess drought with party leaders

The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, is scheduled to examine the ongoing drought conditions in the state together with senior members of the YSR Congress Party, The Hindu reported. The review will take place in Vijayawada and is intended to gauge the severity of water scarcity across the most affected districts.

The meeting comes after consecutive months of below‑normal rainfall, which has left reservoirs at historically low levels and hampered sowing operations for farmers in the Rayalaseema and coastal regions. State officials have warned that the shortfall could threaten the upcoming Kharif crop, a staple for both local consumption and export.

In response, the Andhra Pradesh government has previously rolled out irrigation projects such as the Jalayagnam programme and accelerated the construction of minor irrigation tanks. However, experts note that these measures often require several years to translate into tangible relief, especially when monsoon deficits persist.

The upcoming review will likely involve a briefing on reservoir data, groundwater depletion rates, and the status of relief schemes already in place.
