Canada Announces $50 Million Relief Package for Lebanon Amid Israeli Military Action

Canada has unveiled a $50 million aid package aimed at alleviating the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Lebanon after Israel launched a cross‑border operation that the government described as an unlawful invasion. The funds will be channelled through United Nations agencies and vetted non‑governmental organisations to support food distribution, emergency shelter, medical care and the needs of displaced families in the south of the country.

In a statement released from the foreign affairs ministry, Canadian officials condemned the Israeli military move, calling it a breach of international law and a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty. The government reiterated its long‑standing commitment to a peaceful, sovereign Lebanon and urged all parties to respect United Nations resolutions governing the region.

The new assistance builds on Canada’s previous contributions to Lebanon, which have included disaster relief after the 2020 Beirut port explosion and ongoing support for economic stabilization programs. By directing the latest funds toward immediate relief, Ottawa aims to address the surge in civilian casualties and the growing number of internally displaced persons reported in the wake of the fighting.

Canadian officials also highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation, noting that the aid will complement efforts by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, the World Food Programme and other partners already operating on the ground. The package is expected to be disbursed over the coming months, with regular monitoring to ensure that resources reach the most vulnerable communities.

The condemnation of Israel’s actions aligns Canada with a broader international chorus calling for restraint and a return to diplomatic dialogue. While the Canadian government stopped short of imposing new sanctions, it signalled that any further escalation could prompt a reassessment of its bilateral relations with Israel.
