Coimbatore Airport Set for ₹2,200 crore Upgrade with New Mega Terminal

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has unveiled a comprehensive modernization plan for Coimbatore International Airport, earmarking roughly ₹2,200 crore for the project. Central to the scheme is a brand‑new terminal building that will spread across 75,000 sq m – a footprint four times larger than the current structure – and incorporate state‑of‑the‑art passenger amenities.

The proposed terminal will feature expanded check‑in counters, wider security lanes, additional boarding gates and dedicated spaces for cargo handling. Designed with future growth in mind, the facility aims to streamline passenger flow and reduce turnaround times, positioning Coimbatore as a more competitive hub in southern India.

Officials cite a steady rise in traveler numbers over the past few years as the primary driver behind the expansion. The airport, which serves a key industrial and educational belt, has begun to feel the strain of limited capacity during peak seasons. A larger terminal is expected to accommodate the surge, improve service standards, and attract new airlines seeking to tap the region’s market.
