Delhi Fuel Pump Blast Claims One Life, Injures Six

A compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinder exploded at a fuel pump in Delhi while a truck was being refilled, turning a routine stop into a deadly blast. The incident occurred at a busy petrol station, where the truck driver’s assistant was overseeing the transfer of gas into the cylinder when the explosion ripped through the area.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes. The person who was filling the cylinder was killed instantly at the scene, while six others—including nearby shop owners and motorists—sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts to serious burns. All the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, and three of them remain in critical condition.

Delhi relies heavily on CNG for public transport and commercial vehicles, a policy aimed at reducing air pollution. However, the rapid growth of CNG infrastructure has raised concerns about safety standards. Officials note that while CNG is generally safe, improper handling, faulty equipment, or lapses in protocol can lead to catastrophic outcomes. The city has witnessed a handful of similar incidents in recent years, prompting calls for stricter inspections and mandatory training for personnel handling high‑pressure cylinders.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) overseeing the case confirmed that a forensic team is examining the cylinder, the refueling equipment, and the surrounding area to determine the exact cause. Authorities have also ordered a temporary shutdown of nearby fuel stations for safety checks. Residents were advised to avoid the vicinity until the investigation concludes and corrective measures are put in place. The incident underscores the need for rigorous adherence to safety guidelines as Delhi continues to expand its CNG network.
