Delhi murder of executive sparks probe into alleged Rs 1.2 crore fraud scheme

The killing of Yuvraj Singh Manchanda, a project manager with Adani Realty, has taken a new turn as Delhi police broaden their inquiry to include a suspected financial scam. According to Times of India, investigators are now looking into whether Manchanda was aware of a fraud operation allegedly orchestrated by his ex‑colleague Anya Vats and her associate Sanyam Sachdeva.

The First Information Report (FIR) filed after the murder claims the pair used counterfeit government notices to swindle a senior executive out of more than Rs 1.2 crore. The fabricated documents purported to be official orders, prompting the victim to transfer funds under false pretenses. Police have seized the couple’s mobile phones and laptops to trace communications and financial trails.

Detectives are scrutinising the movements of Vats and Sachdeva in the weeks leading up to the homicide, as well as the electronic data recovered from their devices. The enquiry aims to determine if the murder was a pre‑emptive act to silence Manchanda before he could expose the scam, or if the two crimes are unrelated. Times of India reported that the FIR explicitly mentions the possibility of Manchanda’s knowledge about the fraudulent scheme.

Fraudsters in India have increasingly turned to forged government notifications to lend credibility to their schemes, a tactic that has duped both individuals and corporations in recent years. High‑profile cases, such as the 2022 “notice‑fraud” racket that targeted several IT firms, have prompted tighter regulatory scrutiny and heightened awareness among corporate security teams. The current investigation underscores the vulnerability of executives who handle large contracts, especially when internal relationships blur the line between professional and personal trust.

The Delhi police have not yet disclosed whether formal charges will be filed against Vats and Sachdeva for the alleged fraud, but they have confirmed that the murder case will proceed in tandem with the financial probe. If the investigation uncovers a direct link between the homicide and the scam, it could lead to a broader crackdown on similar fraud networks operating under the guise of official documentation.
