A surge in affordable synthetic gems is reshaping buying habits, but experts warn the market may still be in its early days.

India’s Jewelers Turn to Lab‑Grown Diamonds as Prices Plummet

Laboratory‑grown diamonds are rapidly gaining traction in India after recent reports highlighted a price differential of up to 80‑90 percent compared with mined stones. NDTV reported that the cost gap can be “substantially less” for comparable quality, making the synthetic option appear as a smart financial choice for many consumers.

The gems are produced using high‑pressure high‑temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques, which replicate the crystal structure of natural diamonds. Because they are chemically identical, they exhibit the same brilliance and durability, yet the controlled manufacturing process eliminates many of the mining‑related expenses and ethical concerns that have long plagued the industry.

In India’s jewellery market, younger buyers are especially receptive to the idea of a “clean” diamond that carries a lower price tag. Retailers in metros such as Mumbai and Delhi have begun showcasing lab‑grown collections alongside traditional offerings, often marketing them as sustainable alternatives. However, analysts caution that resale values for synthetic stones remain uncertain, as the secondary market for natural diamonds still commands higher premiums.

The shift mirrors a global trend where synthetic diamonds accounted for roughly 5 % of the total diamond supply in 2023, a share projected to rise sharply in the coming years. In the United States and Europe, major brands have already integrated lab‑grown options into their flagship lines, prompting Indian manufacturers to explore export opportunities. The Indian government’s Bureau of Indian Standards is also working on certification guidelines to assure buyers of quality and authenticity.

While the lower price point makes lab‑grown diamonds attractive, experts note that the technology is still evolving. Production costs are gradually decreasing, but the industry must address consumer perception and establish robust resale frameworks before the synthetic segment can fully rival natural diamonds. For now, the sparkling allure of a cheaper stone offers Indian shoppers a compelling alternative, especially as sustainability and cost‑effectiveness become central to purchasing decisions.
