President Murmu honors educators with national teaching awards

President Droupadi Murmu presided over a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday, handing out the coveted National Teacher Awards to a select group of educators from across India. The Hindu reported that the President emphasized education as “the most effective means of realising the ideal of equality of opportunity enshrined in our Constitution.”

The awards, which recognize outstanding contributions in school‑level teaching, were presented to 30 teachers who had been shortlisted after a rigorous state‑level vetting process. Each awardee received a citation, a medal and a cash prize, underscoring the government's commitment to elevate the teaching profession.

The National Teacher Awards were first instituted in 1985 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second president and a scholar‑teacher. Traditionally conferred on Teachers’ Day (5 September), the ceremony has become a high‑profile event that showcases exemplary pedagogical practices and encourages other educators to strive for excellence. Over the years, awardees have been drawn from diverse linguistic and geographic backgrounds, reflecting the pluralistic nature of Indian schooling.

India’s education sector faces a mix of opportunities and challenges, from expanding digital infrastructure to addressing teacher shortages in remote areas. Recognising teachers publicly serves both symbolic and practical purposes: it boosts morale, provides role models for younger educators, and aligns with the government’s broader agenda of improving learning outcomes under the National Education Policy 2020. By spotlighting teachers who have demonstrated innovation, inclusivity, and dedication, the awards aim to inspire systemic improvements.

In her remarks, President Murmu also called for continued investment in teacher training and urged states to ensure that every child, regardless of socioeconomic status, has access to quality instruction. The ceremony concluded with a cultural program featuring student performances, reinforcing the link between educators and the next generation of learners.
