AMD to Acquire World Labs for $8.2 B, Fei‑Fei Li Joins Executive Team

AMD announced on Thursday that it will acquire AI research firm World Labs for $8.2 billion in cash, and that the startup’s founder, Fei‑Fei Li, will become the company’s executive vice president and chief scientist. TechCrunch reported the deal, which is expected to close later this year pending regulatory approval.

World Labs, founded by Li in 2022, has built a portfolio of generative‑AI models and a cloud‑based platform that helps enterprises train large language models more efficiently. The company raised $1.5 billion from investors such as Sequoia and SoftBank before the acquisition, according to TechCrunch.

AMD has been accelerating its AI ambitions after the 2022 purchase of Xilinx, which gave it access to adaptive compute technology. The new acquisition marks the chipmaker’s biggest cash outlay for an AI‑focused firm and signals an effort to compete more directly with Nvidia’s dominant data‑center GPUs. Analysts note that integrating World Labs’ software stack could allow AMD to offer end‑to‑end solutions that combine its EPYC CPUs, Radeon Instinct GPUs, and now proprietary AI models.

The addition of Li, a leading figure in computer vision and former Stanford professor, is expected to boost AMD’s credibility in the research community and attract top talent. Market observers anticipate that the combined hardware‑software offering could shorten the time it takes for customers to deploy custom AI workloads, a factor that could sway cloud providers and enterprises seeking alternatives to Nvidia’s ecosystem.
