Arunachal Pradesh capital stalls as school infrastructure protest erupts

The Hindu reported that a shutdown over poor school infrastructure paralysed Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, on Thursday. Protestors gathered at key junctions, blocking traffic and forcing shops and offices to close. While the demonstration remained largely peaceful, the outlet noted a few stray incidents of violence and damage to vehicles in the city and surrounding areas.

Organisers of the protest, comprising teachers, parents and local activists, said the action was meant to highlight the dilapidated state of many government schools in the region. They pointed to crumbling classrooms, insufficient sanitation facilities and a shortage of basic teaching equipment as evidence that students are being denied a safe learning environment.

The bandh effectively halted public transport and disrupted daily commerce in Itanagar. Buses were stranded, commuters were forced to seek alternative routes, and market stalls reported a sharp drop in footfall. Law enforcement deployed additional personnel to contain the unrest and to protect critical infrastructure, though the report mentioned only limited property damage.

Arunachal Pradesh, like several other northeastern states, has struggled to meet the infrastructure standards set by India’s Right to Education Act. Funding shortfalls, difficult terrain and a dispersed population often impede the timely upgrade of school facilities. Similar protests have erupted in neighboring states over the past few years, underscoring a broader regional challenge in delivering quality education.

State officials have pledged to review the grievances and to allocate additional resources for school renovation projects. A senior education officer told local media that a task force would be formed to audit school conditions and to fast‑track repairs. The outcome of the bandh could set a precedent for how quickly authorities respond to infrastructure‑related demands in the Northeast.
