China’s space agency is gearing up for the launch of its next lunar probe, Chang'e‑7, slated for later this year. The spacecraft will target the Moon’s south‑pole region, where craters never see sunlight and are believed to hold reserves of water ice. By studying these shadowed basins, scientists hope to determine the quantity, purity and distribution of the frozen water that has been locked away for billions of years.

The mission architecture includes a lander, a rover and a small hopping probe designed to reach the steep walls of deep craters that are otherwise inaccessible. Once on the surface, the rover will drill into the regolith and use spectrometers and neutron detectors to confirm the presence of ice and to assess its composition. The hopping probe, released from the lander, will bounce across crater interiors, gathering high‑resolution imagery and thermal data that can reveal how ice is stored in permanently dark zones.

Understanding lunar ice is more than an academic exercise. Water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen, providing propellant for future lunar landers and potentially supporting life‑support systems for habitats. If the ice is abundant and easily extractable, it could reduce the cost of delivering resources from Earth and make a sustained human presence on the Moon more feasible. Moreover, the isotopic signatures of lunar water may shed light on the early history of the Earth‑Moon system and the delivery of volatiles across the inner solar system.

China’s lunar program has progressed rapidly, moving from orbiters and sample‑return missions to increasingly complex surface operations. Chang'e‑7 follows the successful Chang'e‑5 sample‑return mission and precedes the planned Chang'e‑6 and Chang'e‑8 projects, which aim to retrieve and process lunar material. The new mission underscores Beijing’s ambition to become a leading partner in international lunar exploration, while also gathering data that could inform future collaborative efforts on the Moon’s south pole.

If the mission confirms substantial ice deposits, it would mark a turning point for both scientific research and the economics of space travel, offering a tangible resource that could support the next generation of lunar bases and deep‑space missions.
