CrossCountry suspends nationwide services following Birmingham power failure
A loss of electricity at the operator’s central control hub forced the long‑distance train provider to cancel the majority of its routes across England, Scotland and Wales.

CrossCountry announced the suspension of almost all its scheduled services after a sudden power outage crippled the control centre in Birmingham. The incident, which struck the heart of the company’s signalling and communication systems, left the operator unable to safely manage its extensive network that links major cities from the south coast to the Scottish Highlands.
The outage disrupted the real‑time monitoring of trains, prompting CrossCountry to halt departures as a precaution. Passengers with tickets for the affected journeys were instructed to check the company’s website or mobile app for updates and to consider alternative travel arrangements. The operator also said refunds and re‑booking options would be made available to those impacted.
Rail authorities in the region coordinated with emergency crews to restore power and bring the control centre back online. While technicians worked to resolve the fault, some limited services began to resume later in the day, but the majority of routes remained cancelled. The situation highlighted the vulnerability of rail infrastructure to single‑point failures and sparked calls for greater redundancy in critical systems.
Travelers heading to popular destinations such as Manchester, Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh were among those most affected. Local transport providers, including bus operators and other train companies, reported a surge in demand as commuters sought alternatives. The Department for Transport issued a brief statement urging passengers to allow extra travel time and to stay informed through official channels.
CrossCountry’s chief operating officer confirmed that the company is working around the clock to fully restore its timetable. A full assessment of the outage’s cause is underway, and the operator pledged to implement measures to prevent similar disruptions in the future. In the meantime, passengers are advised to monitor service updates closely and to plan for possible delays or cancellations on remaining routes.
