IIM Bangalore launches inaugural undergraduate classes

IIM Bangalore has officially opened its doors to the first cohort of undergraduate students, beginning classroom sessions for the newly introduced BBA (Honours) and B.Sc (Honours) programmes, The Hindu reported. The institute said the inaugural batch will follow a five‑year curriculum designed to blend core management fundamentals with specialised electives, allowing students to graduate with a dual focus on business and data‑driven decision‑making.

Admissions to the programmes were conducted through a dedicated entrance test separate from the CAT used for MBA admissions. Candidates were evaluated on quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and English proficiency, with the selection process described as “highly competitive.” The institute has not disclosed the exact number of seats, but indicated that the inaugural cohort is modest in size to ensure a personalised learning environment.

The move reflects a broader shift among India’s elite management schools, which have traditionally catered only to postgraduate students. IIM Bangalore, consistently ranked among the top business schools in the country, announced the UG launch in 2022 as part of its strategy to nurture talent earlier and diversify its academic portfolio. By offering a business‑focused undergraduate pathway, the institute aims to address growing demand from high‑school graduates who seek a direct route into management careers without first completing a generic bachelor's degree.

Industry observers note that the new programmes could reshape hiring patterns, as graduates will emerge with a blend of analytical and managerial skills that align with the digital transformation of Indian enterprises. Companies in technology, consulting and finance have already expressed interest in recruiting from the inaugural batch, viewing the curriculum’s emphasis on data science and strategic thinking as a valuable asset.

The first semester will cover foundational subjects such as microeconomics, statistics, and organizational behaviour, followed by electives that allow students to specialise in areas like marketing, operations or artificial intelligence. IIM Bangalore expects the UG programmes to expand in size and scope over the next few years, potentially adding new specialisations and increasing intake as the model gains traction across the country.
