In a recent interview, he described the current waiting lists for kidney, liver, heart and lung procedures as “unfair” and warned that the lack of decisive action is putting patients at risk of avoidable death.
Data released by NHS Blood and Transplant show that more than 7,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant, while thousands of others await liver, heart and lung donations. The medical director highlighted that, despite a modest increase in donor numbers over the past year, the gap between organs offered and patients needing them continues to widen. He argued that the existing allocation system does not adequately address regional disparities, leaving some patients waiting far longer than others.
According to the director, senior leaders within NHS England and NHS Improvement have not provided a clear strategy to tackle the issue. He called for a coordinated national plan that would accelerate the adoption of new technologies, such as machine perfusion for kidneys, and increase funding for transplant pathways. "We need to move beyond incremental fixes and deliver a system that works for patients today," he said, without naming specific officials.
The criticism comes at a time when the UK government has pledged to double organ donation rates by 2030. While the pledge signals political will, the medical director stressed that without concrete operational changes, targets will remain out of reach. He urged the health service to prioritize transplant capacity, improve data sharing across regions, and engage more effectively with donor families.
