AAP accuses central government of fueling sugar price surge

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has publicly challenged the Union government over the recent surge in retail sugar prices. Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal highlighted that India, once a net exporter of sugar, is now contemplating imports to meet domestic demand. He argued that the abrupt policy reversal has left consumers facing higher costs for a staple commodity.

Kejriwal’s remarks came during a press briefing in Delhi, where he warned that the price spike could erode household budgets, especially for low‑income families. He urged the centre to intervene swiftly, citing the need for a comprehensive strategy that includes stabilising market rates and reassessing import plans.

The minister also pointed to the broader context of global commodity fluctuations, noting that while many nations are grappling with rising input costs, India’s situation is aggravated by a perceived lack of timely action from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. He called for transparent communication on the government’s sugar procurement and distribution mechanisms, suggesting that clearer policy signals could temper market speculation.

Industry observers have noted that India’s sugar surplus has dwindled in recent months due to lower cane yields and delayed payments to farmers. The prospect of importing sugar, while intended to bridge the shortfall, may further pressure prices if not managed carefully. Kejriwal’s criticism reflects growing political pressure on the centre to balance farmer interests with consumer affordability.
