Chennai Fishermen Turn to Ocean Catch as River Hauls Dwindle

In recent months, fishermen operating along Chennai’s waterways have reported a noticeable drop in river catches, prompting many to pivot toward the richer yields of the Bay of Bengal. The change reflects growing concerns over water quality in the city’s rivers, which have been strained by industrial discharge, sewage inflow, and seasonal low flows.

Local anglers, who once relied on species such as carp and catfish from the Cooum and Adyar rivers, now find that the same effort yields fewer kilograms of fish. Simultaneously, demand for marine varieties like seer, pomfret and shrimp continues to climb in city markets, offering a more profitable alternative for those willing to venture farther offshore.

State fisheries officials have acknowledged the trend, noting that riverine ecosystems are under stress and that the shift to sea‑based fishing could become a longer‑term adjustment for coastal communities. Efforts to improve river health—including stricter effluent standards and periodic clean‑up drives—are underway, but experts warn that recovery will take time.

The transition is not without challenges. Ocean fishing demands different gear, larger vessels and greater capital outlay, which can be a barrier for small‑scale operators accustomed to modest river boats. Some cooperatives are responding by pooling resources, arranging shared trawlers, and seeking micro‑loans to finance the upgrade.

While the move toward seafood has helped many sustain their livelihoods, environmentalists caution that unchecked expansion of marine fishing could create new pressures on offshore stocks. Balancing the revival of river habitats with responsible sea harvests will be key to securing a stable future for Chennai’s fishing sector.
