Comcast equips Xfinity gateways with built‑in motion detection

Comcast has rolled out a software update that transforms its Xfinity gateway routers into passive motion sensors. The capability, branded as Wi‑Fi Motion, arrives as part of the Xfinity Shield security suite and is enabled through the latest version of the Xfinity Internet app, which went live on August 18.

The technology works by monitoring the strength and continuity of the Wi‑Fi link between the gateway and any connected device. When a person or object moves through a room, the signal can be briefly disrupted or altered, prompting the router to register a motion event. Users receive a push notification that mirrors the behavior of a traditional battery‑powered motion detector, but without the need for extra hardware.

Only newer Xfinity gateways—specifically the XB7 model and later revisions—support the feature. After updating the app, owners can toggle Wi‑Fi Motion on or off and customize alert preferences at no additional charge. Comcast emphasizes that the service runs locally on the router, and only anonymized motion data is sent to its servers to generate alerts.

Privacy advocates note that the system does not record video or audio, relying solely on signal fluctuations. Nonetheless, Comcast advises customers to review the new terms of service to understand what data may be collected. The company positions the feature as a convenient addition for renters or households that already have an Xfinity router but lack a dedicated security sensor.

Analysts see the move as a way for Comcast to deepen its ecosystem and differentiate its broadband offering from competitors. By leveraging existing hardware, the provider can deliver a value‑added service while potentially gathering insights into home occupancy patterns, a trend that could shape future smart‑home integrations.
