India’s 1965 War Ace Flight Lieutenant A.T. Cooke Passes Away

Flight Lieutenant A.T. Cooke, a decorated veteran of the 1965 Indo‑Pak conflict, died in Delhi on September 18, a senior official confirmed. The Hindu reported that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has issued a formal statement honoring his service and expressing condolences to his family.

Cooke earned the Vir Chakra, India’s third‑highest wartime gallantry award, for his actions during the 1965 war with Pakistan. As a fighter pilot, he flew combat missions that contributed to the IAF’s defensive and offensive operations, a fact highlighted in the tribute released by the air force. His career spanned several decades, during which he mentored younger aviators and remained active in veteran circles.

The IAF’s tribute, posted on its official channels, praised Cooke’s “steadfast courage” and “dedication to the nation.” Senior officers recalled his calm demeanor under fire and his role in shaping tactical doctrine for subsequent generations of pilots.
