India's Army Chief and Nepal's Prime Minister Discuss Defence Cooperation

India’s top army officer, General Dhiraj Seth, held a meeting with Nepal’s newly‑elected Prime Minister Balendra Shah in Kathmandu on Thursday. The two leaders used the session to review a range of issues that affect both countries, with a particular focus on enhancing their bilateral military relationship.

According to officials in the prime minister’s secretariat, the dialogue covered ways to strengthen defence cooperation, improve joint training programmes and expand information‑sharing mechanisms. Both sides reiterated a shared interest in maintaining stability along the porous India‑Nepal border and in addressing common security challenges such as cross‑border smuggling and disaster response.

The meeting is part of a broader series of high‑level contacts that have taken place since the two governments signed a new defence protocol earlier this year. While no specific agreements were announced, the officials said the discussion laid the groundwork for future joint exercises and possible procurement collaborations. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional security dynamics, including the impact of developments in the Indo‑Pacific.

Analysts note that the engagement reflects India’s continued effort to deepen strategic ties with its Himalayan neighbour, especially after a period of diplomatic strain. Nepal, for its part, has signalled a willingness to work more closely with New Delhi on security matters while balancing its own foreign‑policy priorities.
