Karnataka identifies 101 taluks as drought-affected, says more could join list

The Karnataka government has officially labeled 101 taluks across the state as drought‑hit, a move announced by Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara during a briefing in Mysuru. The declaration follows a prolonged shortfall in monsoon rains that has left reservoirs at historically low levels and pushed groundwater tables deeper than usual.
Agricultural districts are bearing the brunt of the water crisis. Crops such as paddy, ragi and cotton, which dominate the region’s agrarian economy, have shown signs of stress, prompting concerns over farmer incomes and food security. Local administrations have already begun distributing drought‑relief packages, including cash assistance and subsidies for drip‑irrigation equipment, to mitigate the impact on vulnerable farming communities.
Parameshwara indicated that the list of affected taluks is not final. “We are continuously monitoring rainfall patterns and water availability. If more areas meet the criteria, they will be added to the drought‑hit roster,” he said. The criteria for inclusion involve a combination of rainfall deficit, reservoir storage data, and reports of crop distress from district officials.
State officials have also outlined longer‑term measures to address the water shortage. Projects aimed at augmenting rainwater harvesting, rejuvenating traditional tanks, and expanding micro‑irrigation networks are slated for accelerated implementation. The government is urging citizens to conserve water and support community‑level initiatives that can help replenish depleted sources.
The drought declaration underscores the broader climate challenges confronting southern India, where erratic monsoon patterns are becoming increasingly common. While immediate relief efforts aim to cushion farmers this season, the state’s emphasis on sustainable water management reflects a shift toward building resilience against future dry spells.
