Kerala community mourns loss of veteran social activist Mavoorus Maliyekkal

Veteran social worker Mavoorus Maliyekkal passed away on Tuesday at the age of 78, The Hindu reported. A native of the Malabar region, Maliyekkal spent more than five decades organizing grassroots initiatives that ranged from literacy drives to women’s self‑help groups. He was known for his hands‑on approach, often travelling by foot to remote villages to assess needs and mobilise resources.

According to the publication, his death followed a brief hospitalization for complications related to diabetes. Family members confirmed that he had been receiving treatment at a government hospital in Kozhikode before succumbing to the illness. The Hindu also noted that his funeral will be held at his hometown mosque, with community members expected to gather in large numbers.

Maliyekkal’s contributions were not limited to a single cause. He founded the “Kerala Rural Empowerment Forum” in the early 1980s, an umbrella body that linked over 200 village committees across the state. Through the forum, he secured government grants for water supply projects, facilitated micro‑credit schemes for small farmers, and championed the construction of primary schools in underserved districts. Colleagues described him as a “bridge between bureaucracy and the grassroots,” a reputation that earned him several state awards, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi’s social service honour in 2005.

Kerala’s civil‑society landscape has long been shaped by activists like Maliyekkal. The state’s high literacy rate and strong cooperative movement owe much to decades of community‑led organising. However, the sector faces new challenges, such as dwindling volunteer participation and funding cuts, making the loss of seasoned leaders especially poignant. Experts say that the void left by veterans may be mitigated by mentoring younger activists, a practice Maliyekkal himself advocated.

Local politicians and representatives of NGOs have already issued statements of condolence, highlighting his role in improving livelihoods for thousands of families. The Kerala State Social Welfare Department announced that a memorial lecture will be instituted in his name, aiming to keep his philosophy of participatory development alive for future generations.

The passing of Mavoorus Maliyekkal underscores the fragile continuity of grassroots leadership in India’s most socially active states. As Kerala navigates post‑pandemic recovery, the community’s ability to rally around shared goals will likely hinge on the legacy left by figures such as Maliyekkal, whose life work exemplified the power of local action.
