Tamil Nadu revives Arakkonam Amma canteen with fresh inauguration

The Hindu reported that the newly restored Amma canteen in Arakkonam was officially inaugurated this week, marking the completion of a renovation project undertaken by the state government. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department and local representatives, who highlighted the canteen’s role in providing affordable meals to the town’s low‑income residents.

The upgraded facility now features a larger dining hall, modern kitchen equipment and improved sanitation measures. According to the report, the refurbishment aimed to address long‑standing complaints about overcrowding and hygiene, ensuring that the canteen can serve a higher volume of patrons while adhering to health standards.

Amma canteens, introduced in 2001 under the former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, have become a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu’s welfare architecture. The scheme offers a nutritious meal at a nominal price—typically ₹5 for a plate of rice, sambar, and a vegetable side—targeting families living below the poverty line. Over the years, the network has expanded to more than 1,000 outlets across the state, helping to curb hunger and improve food security for millions.

In recent years, several canteens faced criticism over deteriorating infrastructure and inconsistent service quality, prompting the state to launch a systematic upgrade program. The Arakkonam centre’s renovation is part of this broader effort, which includes installing solar panels, digitising payment systems and training staff in food safety protocols.
