Tamil Nadu rolls out initiative to clear national highways of parked vehicles

A new enforcement drive has been launched across Tamil Tamil Nadu’s national highways to stop vehicles from being left on the road shoulder. Police officials say that parked cars, trucks and two‑wheelers have become a regular source of bottlenecks, especially during peak travel periods, and have contributed to a rise in rear‑end collisions and delayed emergency response.

The campaign, spearheaded by the Chennai traffic police in partnership with the state highway department, will involve regular patrols, spot checks and the installation of additional signage warning drivers of the penalties for illegal parking. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, any vehicle found obstructing a national highway can be fined and, if necessary, towed at the owner’s expense. Officers will also use mobile‑based reporting tools and existing CCTV networks to identify violators quickly.

Officials stress that the move is not merely punitive. Public awareness sessions are being organised in towns and villages along the highway corridors, where locals are briefed on the safety risks posed by parked vehicles and the legal consequences of non‑compliance. Community volunteers will assist by flagging illegal parking and guiding motorists to designated lay‑by areas that meet safety standards.

Initial results from a pilot phase conducted on a 30‑kilometre stretch of NH‑45 have shown a 40 % reduction in roadside parking incidents within two weeks. “Keeping the highway clear saves lives and reduces fuel wastage for commuters,” said a senior traffic officer, adding that the initiative will be expanded to other national routes in the state over the coming months.

The campaign is expected to run for at least three months, after which authorities will assess its impact and consider permanent policy adjustments, including stricter enforcement and the creation of more safe parking bays at regular intervals.
