Congress to field candidates for every ward in Andhra Pradesh local elections, seeks coalition partners

The Congress party in Andhra Pradesh announced on Tuesday that it will put forward candidates for every seat in the upcoming local body elections, a move that signals a renewed push to rebuild its grassroots network after a series of setbacks at the state level. The decision, reported by The Hindu, also includes the creation of a three‑member committee tasked with exploring possible alliances with the INDIA bloc, like‑minded parties and organisations opposed to the BJP‑led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

According to The Hindu, the committee will assess the political terrain and identify partners that share a common goal of checking the BJP’s expansion in the state. While the Congress has traditionally been the principal opposition to the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), the new strategy reflects a broader trend of regional parties and national opposition groups coalescing under the INDIA umbrella ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Andhra Pradesh’s local body polls, scheduled for later this year, cover municipal corporations, nagar panchayats and gram panchayats across the state. These elections are often seen as a barometer of public sentiment ahead of state assembly contests, and they provide parties with a platform to mobilise voters at the grassroots level. In the 2021 local elections, the Congress secured a modest share of seats, far behind the YSRCP and the Telugu Desam Party, prompting senior leaders to rethink their outreach tactics.

The formation of the INDIA bloc in early 2023 brought together a coalition of opposition parties ranging from the Congress and the Trinamool Congress to regional outfits like the Aam Aadmi Party. Their stated aim is to present a united front against the BJP’s national agenda, particularly in states where the BJP has made inroads through alliances with local partners. By positioning itself within this broader anti‑BJP framework, the Andhra Pradesh Congress hopes to tap into a wider voter base disillusioned with both the state government and the central ruling party.

If the committee succeeds in forging viable partnerships, the upcoming local elections could become a testing ground for a coordinated opposition strategy in the state.
